Fairtrade

Welcome to the Queen Mary Fairtrade website. As a globally recognised institution, the College has a responsibility for encouraging a more ethical consumer culture. In an effort to meet that responsibility, we have made a commitment to using and supporting Fairtrade. Currently in the process of obtaining Fairtrade accreditation, we plan to establish a socially aware culture on all College campuses by offering a wide range of Fairtrade choices to all students, staff and guests.

What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade is a way of ensuring fairer terms of trade and better working conditions for farmers and workers in developing countries. Fairtrade requires companies to pay fair prices to local producers in order to sport the Fairtrade Mark, a registered certification label that signifies ethically sourced products.

By addressing the injustices of conventional trade, Fairtrade places more control in the hands of local producers and allows them to grow sustainable businesses and, in turn, build better lives.

More information is available on the Fairtrade site.

Our Fairtrade Goals

  • To make Fairtrade foods available for sale in all campus shops.
  • To use Fairtrade foods in campus cafés, restaurants and bars where possible.
  • To serve Fairtrade foods (coffee, tea and refreshments) in all meetings hosted by the College. Please see the list of products we already serve in College meetings.
  • To campaign for increased Fairtrade consumption through more prominent displays across campus.
  • To encourage a Fairtrade culture through a range of promotions and events.
