Catering & Hospitality QM receives formal recognition in an awards scheme that celebrates high-quality and sustainable catering

Catering & Hospitality QM (the in house catering and hospitality supplier of Queen Mary) has earned the Bronze Food for Life Catering Mark in recognition of its commitment to serving healthy and ethical meals to students, staff and visitors in The Curve and The Hive.

The Curve's catering service provides close to 120,000 meals to customers throughout the year and The Hive provides 126,000 to guests staying with Queen Mary during the summer vacation, booked through Events & Hospitality QM the external hospitality brand of Queen Mary.

Independent, verified certification

Run by the Soil Association, the Food for Life Catering Mark is a UK-wide certification scheme, which provides an independent guarantee that food being served is fresh, free from controversial additives and better for animal welfare.

The bronze, silver and gold tiers encourage caterers to use more local, free range, fair trade and organic ingredients to produce healthier menus. The award also entitles both outlets to display the mark as a means of reassuring customers of the commitment.

The Bronze Standard ensures:

    -    No undesirable food additives or hydrogenated fats
    -    75% of dishes are freshly prepared
    -    Meat is from farms which satisfy UK welfare standards
    -    Eggs are from cage-free hens
    -    Menus are seasonal
    -    Training is provided for catering staff
    -    No GM ingredients are used
    -    Free drinking water is prominently available
    -    No fish is served from the (MCS) ‘fish to avoid’ list
    -    Information is on display about food provenance
    -    Suppliers meet appropriate food safety standards

Achieving the Catering Mark may also help QM to move up the People & Planet Green League: the student campaign group has included the bronze Catering Mark in the sustainable food criteria for its league table of universities. Commenting on the achievement, the Head of Catering, Graham Brundle stated: “We’re delighted that The Curve and The Hive have achieved the Bronze Food for Life Catering Mark. We think it is important for businesses to take practical action to improve the food they serve. Our Bronze award demonstrates our commitment to good food, our customers and the environment.”

The success in achieving the Bronze Standard comes on the back of securing a 5* rating in the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme in The Curve, Mucci’s and the SCR Café which reflects that the outlets operate with a ‘Very Good’ level of hygiene.  The scheme, which operates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland helps consumers choose where to eat out or shop by giving them information about the hygiene standards in restaurants, cafes, takeaways, hotels and food shops. Outlets are graded from 1 to 5 stars and the results are published online.
